REMON JEPHCOTT

Being a woman my work primarily concerns a reaction regarding the female condition within her society and culture. The media I use is clay but I often incorporate different materials that will give another quality and expression to my work. This current body of work titled, The Fruits of Evil, has been created from a response to the situation of women in the sex trade. I have related the women to fruit desserts which are displayed and served on cake stands. The desserts look appetising until a closer look is taken; where mould, maggots and flies have now taken possession. My work is multi-fired and multi-layered. The layers are built up with a combination of my own glazes, oxides and stains, commercial under-glazes and glazes, decals and lustres. I often combine ceramic with mixed media, for this body of work I have used silver and glass.

I use an earthenware clay body, to hand-build, press-mould and slip-cast. Which are then bisque to 1120 degrees c, and then glaze firings to 1060 degrees c. Next follows decal and lustre firings.

I aim to immerse the viewer in a sensory and symbolic visual experience.
